Beyond Badges: Uncovering the Lesser-Known Awards of Cub Scouting

The Cub Scouts program, steeped in tradition and values, offers an array of awards that extend beyond the well-known rank advancements. While primary badges such as Wolf, Bear, and Webelos capture the limelight, many lesser-known awards recognize our young scouts' diverse talents and accomplishments. Let’s dive into some of these alternative awards that can further motivate and honor our Cubs.
  • The Outdoor Activity Award
Cub Scouting and the outdoors go hand-in-hand. Beyond the regular outdoor escapades, scouts can earn the Outdoor Activity Award. Tigers through Arrows of Light can receive this badge by participating in specific outdoor-themed adventures catered to their rank. Click here for more information.
  • World Conservation Award
Also known as the "Panda Patch," the World Conservation Award emphasizes the importance of environmental stewardship. Scouts complete specific adventures focused on nature and our planet's conservation to earn this. Click here for more information.
  • Conservation Good Turn
This award emphasizes the principle of "leave no trace" and the significance of giving back to nature. Whether it's a conservation project or community cleanup, the Conservation Good Turn Award recognizes those scouts who take a proactive role in conserving and enhancing the environment. Click here for more information.
  • The Recruiter Strip
Teamwork makes the dream work, and the Recruiter Strip is about growing the pack. If a scout introduces a friend to their pack and that friend joins, the scout is eligible for this award, showcasing their commitment to expanding and enriching the scouting community. Click here for more information.
  • The Whittling Chip
Reserved for the older Bear and Webelos scouts, the Whittling Chip dives deep into knife safety and carving skills. It instills responsibility and introduces scouts to one of the quintessential tools of the outdoors. Click here for more information.
  • STEM/Nova Awards
Scouting isn’t just about the outdoors. The STEM/Nova Awards bridge the gap between science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the core values of scouting. It encourages curiosity and innovation, offering badges across many scientific domains. Click here for more information.

While rank advancements remain milestones in a Cub Scout's journey, these alternative awards provide broader arenas for scouts to shine, catering to varied interests and aptitudes. Celebrating and striving for these badges ensures a holistic, enriching, and diverse scouting experience for all our Cubs.
